Mythology Tarot Cards

For this assignment I was to take a fairy tale or myth and turn it into an art piece. I decided to take the myth of Persephone and Hades and make them into a tarot card reading.
I wanted the tarot card reading to tell the story of Persephone and Hades came together, the pomegranate seeds Persephone ate, and Demeter’s reaction, which led to the creation of the seasons. For a bit of a twist on the story though, I depicted Hades as a woman, turning the story into a Sapphic love story.
I started this project by researching tarot cards as I did not know much about them. I read about what each card symbolized. From there I assigned a card to each character and symbol from the story that I wanted to represent. I also did research on the myth, as our modern understanding of the story can be completely different from the meaning and understanding that Ancient Greece had. For example, knowing that the original myth condemned Zeus for offering Persephone to Hades, imploring him to kidnap her (as Persephone was his daughter) for that is what he would do to court a lady, Hades with the blessing of Persephone’s father kidnapped her and took her to the underworld. With this knowledge I made Zeus the fool for not knowing that not involving Persephone’s mother, Demeter in this deal would result in a catastrophe.
